Recall problems

Deep-rooted recall problems can depend on just how much fun the young dog experiences from a young age. The flight instinct period is usually between four to eight months old.  If, having run off a young male, for example puts up a rabbit and gives chase he will remember the ‘thrill of the chase’ and be less likely to respond to his owner yelling ‘Rover – COME’ when exercised in a familiar place where rabbit smells are abundant. Wise dog owners should be aware of this natural development phase and pay particular attention to their dog throughout this period.   The moment they get the feeling that ‘Rover’ has the urge to wander and ignore the recall command the dog should be put back on a long recall/tracking lead or a flexilead.  This way bad recall habits are avoided.
